In the Curves

The winter is long gone. It’s time to put the sweatshirts and heavy knits aside and get into the spring summer mode with tank tops, cotton blouses and kaftans.

While the fashion glossies are telling us to hit the gym and get rid of our winter fat to get the summer body just in time to be on the beaches, the crazy office hours and other random excuses say otherwise. And while we, and you wait for it, here are some easy styling techniques to hide that ‘extra’ under the flimsy layers of silk and linens.

We’ll categorise the same under the 4 basic body types for women.

Body Shapes

Apple

This body type is top-heavy.
If you have this body type, you need to emphasize on your legs and neck, drawing away attention from your waist and shoulders.

What to Wear: Flared denims, loose tops, v-necks, short skirts.
What NOT to Wear: Round necks, skinny tops, anything that draws attention to your waist.
Weapon of Mass Destruction: Those legs.
Get inspired by: Jennifer Hudson, Elizabeth Hurley and Rosie O’Donnell

Pear

This body type is bottom-heavy.
If you have this body type you have a lot of options to make your bottoms look slimmer, unless of course, you want it otherwise. (wink, wink)

What to wear: Bootcut trousers, brightly coloured and patterned tops paired with darker, structured skirts or jeans, boat necks or cowl necklines, straight leg trousers.
What NOT to wear: Tops and tunics that end at the hips and lighter coloured bottoms.
Weapon of Mass Destruction: Bare arms and shoulders.
Get inspired by: Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Kim Kardashian

Hourglass

This body type has equal hip and bust measurements with a narrow waist.
If you’re one of the lucky few with this body type, dress to flatter your beautiful curves.

What to wear:  Wide leg trousers, knee length hems, low necklines, pencil skirts, fitted jackets, waist-clinching and graphic patterns, slim belts, skinny denims.
What NOT to wear:  Anything with too many ruffles or frills. Shapeless tunics and maxi dresses are a big no, no too.
Weapon of Mass Destruction: Those killer curves.
Get inspired by: Dita Von Teese, Sophia Loren and Salma Hayek

Straight/Rectangular

This body type has the waist, hips and waist of the same size.
Women with this body type should try and exaggerate the curves. Add ruffles and frill for an added texture and volume to your figure.

What to wear: Flared skirts and drawn in waists for a defined waist, sweetheart neckline, skinny denims paired with ruffled and textured tops.
What NOT to wear: Overwhelming styles.
Weapon of Mass Destruction: Your arms and legs
Get inspired by: Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Hillary Duff
